Longer, lower, slacker is the mantra for the updated Marin Nail Trail line this year. The advanced Series 3 double butted aluminum frame features internal cable routing and a 142x12mm rear thru-axle, along with modern trail-focused geometry. Drivetrain duties are handled by a wide-range SRAM NX 1×11 system, while the wheelset features tubeless-ready rims with 29mm inner width mated to Schwalbe performance tires. A RockShox Recon Silver fork smooths out the ride while Shimano hydraulic disc brakes help keep speed in check.
In our opinion the Marin Nail Trail ticks all the right boxes; easily adjustable air forks, less maintenance costs in the 1×11 Sram NX drivetrain, Stiffer bolt thru axles for improved handling and most importantly and the often unquantifiable longer, lower, slacker geometry, that instills trail confidence so all you have to do is worry about getting flies stuck in your teeth as you ride around with a smile on your face.
We often get asked if 11 gears is really enough for a mountainbike, with people often coming from 20, 18, 27 gears down to 11 makes it a very good question. Simply put yes it is, as there is plenty of range in a 1×11 drivetrain, paired with a 32 toothed chainring an 11-42 tooth cassette offers plenty of uphill ease and downhill charge. The more modern 9 speed bikes often only had 11-32 tooth chainrings so the extra 10 teeth that the Marin Nail Trail sports on it’s 11-42 toothed cassette makes up for loosing the chainrings up front with the added benefit of not needing a front derailleur and shifter and it’s associated servicing needs.
